Today's module, building knowledge started with a technical problem in the lecture, resulting in unit revision. We covered the first couple of week, before the problems with the laptop were resolved, and on to the presentation we went.
The presentation began with a pop quiz, which engaged everyone, opening up a discussion. The actual presentation was discussing and defining, 'Data, Information and Knowledge'. The slides covered; their characteristics, importance, relationships and how they can be used.
The first task from the workshop was to browse two websites; http://www.success.co.il/is/dik.html and http://dir.yahoo.com/Reference/Dictionaries, to define: data, information and knowledge. I also used Google definitions to help. Using these resources i synthesised these to find the definitions of; data, information, knowledge and wisdom.
Data: Data is a plural, meaning a collection of facts or pieces of information.
Information: The relationships between data and their meaning.
Knowledge: the application and interpretation of information.
Wisdom: Accumulated knowledge, through experience and learning.
Through researching different definitions of these four words i have discerned that these are steps in a process. Data when given meaning becomes information and through interpretation becomes knowledge. With the application of this in our lives we become wise.
