Week Six: Evaluation & Authentication

Today's lecture was on the topic of web evaluation and authentication. Though the world wide web is convenient, accessible and broad source, is it credible? This is the argument that this weeks workshop is based on. The power point presentation was based around how can you tell if a web page is authentic? Then offered up several questions to ask about a web page before you use it as a source.

The 1st Task in the LAB, was to browse 3 different web sites all on the topic of authenticating websites. They, like the lecture slides, were all based around 5 steps to evaluating a web page:
  1. Authority - Who is the author of the page? Is their a link to more information about them?
  2. Accuracy - Is the content credible and reliable? Does it all add up? Are their references available?
  3. Objectivity - What was the purpose for publication of the web page?
  4. Currency - When was the page first posted? When was it last updated?
  5. Coverage - Is the information superficial? How in-depth is it?

After this i put these questions to action, by evaluating two websites on the subject of 'The Sixties'.
