As time goes on we haver gottne the concept, that music on the internt is FREE. Which it is not, and when we do use down loadinbg programs were we pay nothing the artists don't get paid or get acknowledged. A concept similar to plagarism. The use of music on the internet is an attractive selling point but when it's used it needs appropriatteclearnace to be obtained and used.

Though when music is downloaded, using programs such as limewire it bipasses all clerances. The reprocautions for this and are the exploitation of the reproduction of musical work and the lack of communication with the public (between byuer and seller).

References

Australian Copyright Council's Online Information Centre. We covered the first couple of week, before the problems with the laptop were resolved, and on to the presentation we went.

The presentation began with a pop quiz, which engaged everyone, opening up a discussion. The actual presentation was discussing and defining, 'Data, Information and Knowledge'. The slides covered; their characteristics, importance, relationships and how they can be used.

The first task from the workshop was to browse two websites; http://www.success.co.il/is/dik.html and http://dir.yahoo.com/Reference/Dictionaries, to define: data, information and knowledge. I also used Google definitions to help. Using these resources i synthesised these to find the definitions of; data, information, knowledge and wisdom.

Data: Data is a plural, meaning a collection of facts or pieces of information.

Information: The relationships between data and their meaning.

Knowledge: the application and interpretation of information.

Wisdom: Accumulated knowledge, through experience and learning.

Through researching different definitions of these four words i have discerned that these are steps in a process. Data when given meaning becomes information and through interpretation becomes knowledge. With the application of this in our lives we become wise.

Week Nine: Communications

Communication is the exchanging of information and thoughts between two parties. There are many kinds and means of communication. Synchronous, Asynchronous, 'Place dependent', and 'Place Independent'.

Achronous: All parties involved, all the time.

Synchronous: Take their turn, in their own time. Responding.

Place 'Dep': Same place

Place 'Indep' - Can be anywhere.

These definitions are in the context of communication between two parties.

Many means of communication:

Mobile phones

Video/tele-conferencing

Ipod, Mp3, laptops

Electronic mail (Email)

Multimedia communications

Though some of these means of communication are merging. For example, mobile phones on the 3G network have mp3 players, Internet access, Navigator (GPS), Video and Multimedia. Music, Games, pod casts and even screenings of reality TV shows such as Big Brother can be viewed. MSN for a minimal $5 per month can be a download bonus.
The first task in today's workshop was to go to the well-know and commonly used, Google.com. Using their 'groups' option search a topic of personal interest and investigating their results. As we are finishing this Preparation course, and moving onto further education prospects, we are also looking into different financial pathways. My term of interest was 'Student loans'. The groups that came from the search resemble something i would see in a normal Google search; loan interests, potential bankruptcy and programs available. As i didn't think this was good enough i researched another term, with a similar link, 'HECS-fee help' My search results were similar to my first attempt, with a majority of links irrelevant to my search. With many of the messages and links posted not sharing purpose with my choice of topics.

The next step was to investigate the use of pod casts and their benefits to student. To do this i visited, http://podcasts.yahoo.com/. Sticking with a similar theme, i searched student loans again and to my surprise only two pages of results listed. A sign that a majority of the links were relevant to the search term I'd used. Browsing through some i noticed that most of them had the optio of where thery could download the pod cast to. With the most used being Itunes. The most commonly used music storage program; with the avaliabilty of holding, musioc, images videos and podcasts. This is a huge beneficery to students, like myself who are constantly, 'on-the-go'.

This is the results for my pod cast search... This excercise was to show us how to use the referencing program. I learnt in-text and end-text refernecing, inserting citations. Automatically how to refernce. Discering wheteher there is enough information about a source, and if it is credible. There are different types of presentations. Oral and written are the main two categories, but today’s lecture covered four main points; Structure of a presentation, preparation for presentation delivery, how to use Microsoft PowerPoint on Vista and strategies to giving an impacting presentation. We learn that though were not necesarily taught how to give an impacting presentation, it is a skill worth listing on your resume, Óral presentation skills'. This module covers everything we will need to know in order to obtain this skill.

This was beneficial because in UPC0001, Learning at University, we will be giving an oral presentation with the aid of a powerpoint presentation. So this module was benificial in that way.

The workshop today began with browsing through a website about how to deliver a great oral presentation with the guide of a powerpoint presentation.

With the help of a website titled, 'Online resources for how to prepare and deliver a presentation' i have created a 'Top 5'stratedgies to deliver a impacting presentation

1. Enthusiasm is essential, use humour but use it wisely
2. Planning and preparation is vital
3. Pay attention to the type of audience you will present in front of, ensure your presentation is tailored towards them.
4. Keep your presentation slides simple, don’t overload with information
5. Take your time!

After this we put we learnt into action by creating a powerpoint presentation, on how to deliver a low impact presentation... Though the world wide web is convenient, accessible and broad source, is it credible? This is the argument that this weeks workshop is based on. The power point presentation was based around how can you tell if a web page is authentic? Then offered up several questions to ask about a web page before you use it as a source.

The 1st Task in the LAB, was to browse 3 different web sites all on the topic of authenticating websites. They, like the lecture slides, were all based around 5 steps to evaluating a web page:

Authority - Who is the author of the page? Is their a link to more information about them?

Accuracy - Is the content credible and reliable? Does it all add up? List at least four search engines:
a. Google
b. Yahoo
c. Safari
d. Firefox
2. What are some of the problems you encounter using search engines:
a. Irrelevant search link
b. Build up of enormous indices
c. To broad a search
d. Broken links
3. What are some of the strategies you can use to overcome these problems:
a. “ “ - Use quotation marks to narrow the search to exact words.
b. Boolean Search.
c. String keywords by relevance and importance.
d. Use the terms; and, or and of

4. What is meant by a Boolean Search:
Adding a + (positive) and - (negative) courser marks to narrow down the search.

5. Search Engines – A programme that browses the net, according to keywords.
2. Directories.

Today's tutorial was focused on what was discussed in the lecture.
Here are 4 points that will help with searching efficiently and effectively

Know what you are looking for and where to look.

Fine-Tune you keywords.

Be refine; use phrases is possible/ use Boolean.

Query by example; find similar sites, create an initial hot list.

Here are the steps of how i found these four tips:

Read the tutorial worshop sheet on myECU

Go to the website provided: www.monask.com/spidap.html

Searched the website for the four strategies

Included in the worksop were three Readings:

Reading 1 – Robert Harris- Web Search Strategies

The reading covered two main questions;
1. How can I know what I want?
2. How can I know what I find is any good?

How do i know my sources are authentic:
1. Browse the website to see whether it is reliable or not.
2. Are the claims on the website supported or just websites.
3. A reliable website contains
o Authors name
o Authors title or position
o Affiliated with an organisation
o Publication and modified date
o Contact Information

Reading 2 – The History of the Internet

This reading covers the history of the search engines, and how impotrantn they are. It covers the different kinds of search engines. Their are also images to help with the understanding, these which helped immensley in diffirenciatte between the search engines. It also covers indicies, indexes, databases, directories and library catalouges.

Week Four - Using the WWW...

Today’s lecture notes, ‘Using the www’ have been my favourite module so far. Something I have used and depended on for so long was Broken down so I could actually understand it. The Internet. In the PowerPoint presentation the Internet was Broken down to its core and origin. Though a lot of the workshop was on the history, the lecture discussed:

The Internet vs. The web

The historical perspective of the www

Defining the web

Web protocols

Web browsers and Interfaces

The tutorial workshop looked at 5 questions, and 3 websites.

The first two questions are aimed a two websites; www.haggishunt.scotsman.com and www.molossia.org.

How have the websites sttempted to be authentic?

List at least four clues that give this site away as a spoof?

These last three questions are directed at; www.martinlutherking.org.

1. What do you expect to find, on it based on the URL?
By first looking at the URL, i first notice that it is not a .com but an .org, being short for organisation, which automatically makes this source reliable because it is based on a organisation or vice versa.
2. After visiting the website what are your first impressions?
It looks like a joke to me. They’re hyperlinks, to rap lyrics a new student pop quiz. In the corner is a small exert, exploiting racial slurs on the eve of King’s assassination.
3. After researching the website, what do you think?
I agree with my prediction, this site is base on slandering Martin Luther King, saying his sermons were plagiarized, accusing MLK of stealing the church’s offering to hire prostitutes and then beating them whilst engaging in perverse sexual encounters. This website’s purpose is beat down Martin Luther King’s well known reputation.

If their was a fight between the Internet and the web, who would win??? To tell you the truth i don’t know because up and till this point i believed them to be on the same side, in fact the same thing all together. Apparently not, but they both have a co-dependent relationship with each other – needing the other to do their job. The web is a virtual space of information and the net is the technical partner connecting us all the web. The journey of the web began in 1989, developed by a researcher Tim Berners-Lee, and if i must say so myself, he truly did do his research, and because he did so can we, pun intended.

Reading One: A Brief History of the Internet.

This not very brief history of the internet, covers everything their is to know about the life of the computer, from the begginning to now. It takes you through the steps creating the internet, The idea, '' The Galactic Network 'in August 1962 by J.C.R Licklider. That very concept is now our modern day internet. Then their was ARPANET, In 1969, which was also the year of the first computer. By the end of that very year their were 4 host computers connected together, just like licklider invisioned.

Chapter One: The development of computers until the 1960’s.
The Internet enables communication and transferral of information and data between computers at any location. It wasn’t always like that. The first chapter, ‘The origins of growth of the internet and the world wide web’, speaks of inventions and innovations. The internet is an extremely new technical development, but this chapter, draws back to the early inventions before their innovations. For example the first ever textile machine was not scientific, in comparison to a 21st century sewing machine, it was made largely of wood and pulleys. It also discusses the calculator which dates back as far as 500BC.

Chapter Two: From ARPANET to world wide web.
1957, Geophysical year. The year USA planned to launch a small earth orbiting satellite. That was until Russia launched the sputnik before them into orbiting space. In reaction America developed ARPA ( Adavenced Research Projects Agency). John Licklider was to lead this innovation; just after the release of his concepts ‘Galatic Networks.’ After ARPANET a plan for a computer network system was published, in 1967 so was the first IMP, an interface messager protocol. ARPANET wents public in 1972 at the first internation conference on computers and communication. Through this ARAPNET developed into what we now know yo be as Email, and ARPANET to the Net. The WWW concept created in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee, and a year ;ater a browser, in 1993 there was no more than 150 websitess on the web. Look at the rapid progress technology has made in just over an decade.

Chapter Three: History of Electronic Mail
In 1871 Ray Tomlison sent the world’s first email using ARAPNET. Then usenet was established in 1979.usenet differed from ARPANET, beauce you could acess you emails when the reader felt like it, where every they liked it.

Chapter Four: Search Engines
In 1990 the first search engine was created. It was used to search for computer files, because the web was getting to hard to search with the increasing number of websites on offer, so the created ‘Archie’ to help. This way you could browse and download files as you please. Then databases named, ‘spider’ were developed to sort all the information into groups, and archives. None of the early serves still exists like spider or Archie, but as ti9me changed and developed so did they, and so they changed in to the servers we use today like Google and yahoo

Chapter Five: Basic Net Data.
Internet users have grown dramatically since it’s development began. The growth of the internet is feeding a free for all “Global Village’ for anyone to join. Though not every one is getting the internet. There are still large areas in the world not being affected by the internet boom, or even reaching it.

Refernce List

Scotsman. In the PowerPoint presentation is lecture is questions such as; what are online databases? why would you use libraries and databases for?, and what are their advantages and disadvantages.

We were shown images of the library of Alexander 300BC, and told the story about losing all the fragile scrolls in fire. Reviewing the changes in libraries, then and now puts a different perspective on loaning a couple of books.

Online libraries are used for convenient, they are current and updated, and because of their electronic format they are easily accessible 24/7. This also means they are easy to convert into other PC Applications, review and take notes. If you preferred a hard copy, they can be printed out.

Online Libraries and Databases as well as having their advantages also have their disadvantages such as they are not accusable from search engines such as; Yahoo, Google, ask and safari. This means that you have to specifically hunt for the journal article you are after, on an online library and Database. Also sometimes article’s aren’t available for the public eye, and have to be subscribed to view them.

Like online libraries, online databases are collaborations of sources and information kept together, for easy search and then can later be accessed for certain information.
Also in the lecture were slides on how to work ECU’s online library and databases, then a demonstration was conducted so we could see how to use them step by step.
In our LAB’s we then firsthand had to use these to conduct a search for an online journal article on the topic, ‘Economic Impact of global warming on businesses.'

My Journal article is about the impact global warming is having on the pest and rice crop bussiness in Japan.

Other than journal articles the online libraries and Databases have other useful functions:

Video conferencing with lecturers or tutorials – This is mainly a tool for external students to keep in communication, or to ask any queries they may have.

Radio Microphone booking

Access to Academic tip sheets – These fact sheets will help us in our studies in this course as well in our University degree. They have information form note taking to how to reference.

Access to electronic resources – Found on the online database, up to date and current articles.

E.B.L EBook library

Books and Cd’s availability – What is available when you go into the library

Hard copy library search – This tool will help if you’re looking for a book to help you to see if it is available for hire and is sitting on a shelf or if it’s been taken out. Saving you time, instead of going directly into the library

Live feeds to lectures – Used by external students, giving the feeling of actually being in a lecture. This helps because it’s usually the between-slide-talk that’s most beneficial.

Information about scheduled library workshops and tours.

Library tours and workshops are scheduled throughout the semester on all kinds of topic, from how to use the Dewey decimal system, to using software such as Endnote, to library introduction tours.

These are all tools which are easily accessible, helping to be efficient as well and beneficial. There’s nothing worse than to leave home to go to the library to get about a book, expecting it to be on the shelf, to find it has already been hired out. Online libraries and databases will help with this problem in the future.

After browsing the online libraries and Databases, we were branched out to a website, ‘www.medlineplus.gov. Our task was to purely spend some time browse the information’s available on prescribes medications and health topics. This website was informative, from my work in a nursing home I have become familiar to certain medications so looking them up was professionally beneficial.

\

Image of medlineplus interactive tutorial

From working in a Nursing Home, i come in contact with certain prescribed drugs, one that stuck to my mind was temazapam, which i now know is a sleeping tablet, used for night sedation. I used it to find out the reason for a drug, whi it is prescribed and what side-effects it may cause. People wanting more imformation acan use this website to do just that.

Included in the tutorial were two readings:

Reading One: Finding What You want on the Web

This reading was written by Bill Thompson, a commentator on the BBC World service prgramme, 'Go Digital'. The reading is in first person expressing Thompson's google addiction, and his need to broaden his mind in terms of search engines, and to inevitable break away from the so-called, 'dumb web'. Thompson soon realises it is not as easy as he thought, it would be. His Goal was to "Search the online world effectivley and effecientley as possible."(Thompson, 2004). His awnser was to look at a wider range of web indexes, directories and pathways to non-web resources. Bill Thompson knew he couldn't break away 100% and still accesses google news, purley because it has a greater index.

Reading Two: Bare Bones lesson 7: Basic search tips.

This lesson or reading was a list of basic tips on how to search using, search engines. These include:

" " quotation marks to narrow search, to exactley whats written.

Type keywords and phrases in lowercase, to open the search to all links.

String keyword, it doesn't have to make a sentence, most relevent words first.

Use the 'Find' command to narrow down where information is to save readin a whole text or website. The content was structured around PC applications and what tasks they are able to perform. For example:

Microsoft Word = File Handling
Microsoft Excel = Spreadsheets
Microsoft PowerPoint = PowerPoint presentations
Internet Explorer = Browsing and research.

These were some of the Applications covered in the lecture today. The rest of the lecture and presentation revolved around those applications and their capability and a brief over view of how to use them.

The lecture was light, but the tutorial was the action for the talk when our tasks were to duplicate certain tables and structures in different office Applications including, working with word, and creating a table, graph and pie chart in Excel. Lecturer Helen Cripps Unit Co-ordinater went through a power point presentation – covering important points such as; need-to-know dates, timeline, and hopeful outcomes to the completion of the course.

Today’s lecture was titled ‘Module One: Using Computers’. This module covered Basic Computing and what we’ll need to have access to, such as; a USB thumb drive, Active Email account and myECU profile.

Important points covered in the lecture were:
- What I can use a PC for.
- How to obtain IT skills.
- What these skills can be beneficiary for such as; Research, word processing, creating presntations and ways to communicate.

After the lecturer i moved on to my LAB, in which Helen Cripps had followed me to as my tutor. After introductory novelties, we got down to work. Our first workshop was to create a blog on www.blogger.com.

The means for creating this blog was to weekly write a post about that days lecture and tutorial, reinforcing the content.

Also to personalize our blogs, the option of uploading photos using two different websites, www.imageshack.com and www.photobucket.com.
